Meditation can be defined as techniques intended to encourage heightened states of awareness/focused attention. Many people like the idea of meditation but find the practice of sitting still and clearing the mind quite challenging. The truth is that many things qualify as a meditation practice: walking in silence, grooming a horse, qigong, drumming, yoga just to name a few. These can be active meditations. By focusing our intent while participating in activities such as these, we can achieve heightened awareness and focused attention. Many veterans are trained through experiential education or learn-by-doing. Active meditation takes this into account and utilizes movement in the meditation practice. There is no need to clear the mind to meditate and participants are taught a technique where in “monkey mind” or wandering thoughts are simply acknowledged and a refocusing on present moment is encouraged.
